While anti-abortion extremists with ties to violence at clinics, against women and their doctors, and now, GOP extremists in Washington and Florida, are busy setting their hair on fire as they try (again) to take down Planned Parenthood, they’re also exposing their fake outrage for what it really is: Hypocrisy of monstrous proportions.
How can you tell? Here's just one of the many ways.
In 2012, the GOP made a man who actually DID profit from abortions, and quite handsomely I might add, their presidential nominee.
Mitt Romney, the man who can sniff out profits from other’s misery faster than pigs can locate truffles, was part of a group who invested in a medical waste company called Stericycle for $75 million. The investment earned Romney and the group tens of millions of dollars in profits. Among the medical waste Stericycle disposed of? Aborted fetal tissue. The same thing that conservatives are pretending to be disgusted by now.
The difference is that Planned Parenthood doesn't profit from aborted fetal tissue. They allow voluntary donations of that tissue by patients, which are then transported elsewhere for medical research.
Worse, while Planned Parenthood patients who donate the tissue, again, the active word being "donate," are freely contributing to medical research that helps others, Romney made profits from disposing of it as medical waste. The operative word there being "waste." No research, just take it to the dump and send Mittens a nice check, thank you very much.
Were the Republicans, some who now vow to shut down the government over defunding PP, outraged by the fact that Mitt Romney was profiting from aborted fetal tissue? Were they spewing rage about religious beliefs? Were they wringing their hands over "baby parts" being sold off to the highest medical waste bidder?
No, of course not. They were happily nominating the highest fetal tissue disposal bidder for President.
In fact, Florida's own walking anti-health care, anti-woman nightmare Rick Scott, who just this week launched his own pretend investigation of PP clinics who don't even donate tissue, cheered Romney on in support. And why wouldn't he? Hospitals his former company owned actually performed abortions, and back then when he was making huge profits, he didn't seem to think abortions were a big deal either. But as a newly crowned member of the conservative outrage machine, he now leads the local RW crusade against tissue donations at Florida PP clinics where they never even happen, because politics.
And while national right wing bloggers foam at the mouth feigning disgust on the subject today, back when Romney's abortion profits first came to light, they were the first to come to his defense, and when that defense was crushed to dust by reality, they denied it was happening altogether. You know, kind of how they're denying reality now. That reality being that patients are simply donating tissue of their own free will for medical research.
Add to this hypocrisy, some of the same GOP members of Congress vowing to shut down PP now actually voted to make tissue donations from abortions at PP clinics possible in the first place. Members like the GOP 2008 Presidential nominee John McCain, who also chose frothing "pro-life" shrew Sarah Palin as his VP pick. Members like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). How is it that fetal tissue donations in the 90's were somehow different than fetal tissue donations in 2015?
So keep this in mind the next time you hear someone on the right feign disgust at the medical research Planned Parenthood provides. Because this has less to do with abortion than it has to do with yet another way to block health care to women, while exerting power over them at the same time.
