Once again, The Daily Show illustrates why they're sometimes a more credible "news source" than traditional media.
Here, John Oliver goes to the heart of the conventional wisdom, and the truth on why so many Washington lawmakers still refuse to pass gun legislation that 91 percent of Americans want.
Watch as a former aid to Sen. Harry Reid admits that getting reelected is more important to politicians than enacting legislation that protects the public safety, the evidence of which we saw last week in Washington. Sadly, you'll also see that Australian politicians faced with the same political consequences were still willing and able to do the right thing. If only more of our politicians had the guts to do the same.
In essence, McConnell is mocking Harry Reid with the fact that a Republican minority in the Senate can continue to block bills like today's that 91% of Americans are in favor of. He also mocks every American, victim, Newtown parent, and Democracy itself while doing so.
Yes, Harry Reid should have acted on the filibuster when he had a chance, but he made a "deal" with McConnell anyway. He should have known better. I believe he DID know better at the time. We can only hope Reid will change that in the future, because today's successful filibuster would never have happened if he had when he had the chance.
That being said, this childish, to put it in the kindest of terms, and repulsive, shameless stunt is beyond the dignity of an elected official. It's not beyond McConnell's dignity because he has none. But this is the Senate Minority Leader. These were children and their teachers who were gunned down, and a grown man and elected official has reduced their memories to what he sees as an amusing meme.
What kind of a monster mocks blocking any legislation that could help prevent another Newtown?
The kind that Kentucky voted into, and should vote out of office: Mitch McConnell.
