By now I'm sure everyone has heard the words of wisdom offered yesterday by Mike Huckabee when he lectured the GOP on how to lecture the womenfolk so as not to appear to be participating in what they've been ever so wrongly accused of doing by the Democrats (and by anyone with an IQ), in conducting a War on Women.
"Just stop listening to the Democrats" Huckabee said, as if they ever did so. Huck went on:
"The fact is the Republicans don’t have a war on women, they have a war for women, to empower them to be something other than victims of their gender.”
I could point out here that it's because of our gender that Republicans discriminate and seek to victimize us whenever possible, for example, demanding that if we won't stay in our place, which is home, but insist on working for a living, we must not be paid the same as our male co-workers.
But I digress. Back to the wisdom of the Huckabee:
"If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it," Huckabee said. "Let's take that discussion all across America."
Factual errors from The Huckster's statements aside, we ladies don't gather for weekly meetings at male Democratic headquarters for our mandatory lectures on libido control as they hand out our fallback birth control because we are indeed as weak as the old wives tales say we are. Nope, Never happens.
But before Mr. Huckabee sets out on that road trip to take this discussion all across America, he might want to take a trip down memory lane first and read some of his own work as Governor. Because when he was governor of Arkansas, he he had a completely different viewpoint on this law:
It's the Equity in Prescription Insurance and Contraceptive Coverage Act. If plans provide prescription coverage, they must cover birth control.
Here's the religious exemption language, verbatim, from Arkansas law:
"Religious employer" means an entity:
(A) That is organized and operated for religious purposes and has received a § 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service;
(B) That has as one (1) of its primary purposes the inculcation of religious values; and
(C) That employs primarily persons who share its religious tenets
And here's the crux of the coverage requirement:
Every health benefit policy that is delivered, issued, executed, or renewed in this state or approved for issuance or renewal in this state by the Insurance Commissioner on or after the effective date of this subchapter that provides coverage for prescription drugs on an outpatient basis shall provide coverage for prescribed drugs or devices approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for use as a contraceptive.
The Huckabees of the world were perfectly fine with this entire contraception thing, never even gave it a second thought. And then Obama, and Obamacare came along, and suddenly Republicans were outraged to find that women were engaging in sexy-time and in an almost completely normal fashion! And that health insurance was including, gasp, contraception coverage! EEEEEEEEEEEEK!
One can only assume that he's lost touch with reality, and his beliefs, or that he's very well aware, but just doesn't care. My money's on the latter. Otherwise there would be no hopes of causing a faux outrage he could use to launch another rainmaker.
Huckabee has been ranting and raving about this for years. If there are "loose" women out there, he, Mike Huckabee should not have to pay for their smutfests! No sir! No. More!
Well, no one is suggesting he do so, and he doesn't. He just wants his believers to think so in order to relieve them of hefty donations so he can keep building that dream beach house of his in Florida.
